OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the overall authority of the Director of the Division of Conferences, Languages and Documents (DIR/CLD), and under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Spanish Translation Unit (STU),

the incumbent shall:

  • Revise and carry out quality control of translations internally and externally produced. 
  • Translate on a self-revising basis, ensuring compliance with the quality and productivity standards in force. In doing so, use computer-assisted translation tools such as neural machine translation tools and artificial intelligence-based tools, as well as terminological tools, where required. 
  • Finalize summary and verbatim records and other types of texts.
  • Assist in evaluating and selecting potential short-term and freelance translators and then in training and monitoring them; assist in training young translators.
  • Carry out linguistic, terminological and documentary research and terminology validation, when necessary; make effective use of relevant language technologies and tools; and contribute to the development of skills related to the use of new translation technologies. Endeavour, by making recommendations and proposals to the Chief of Unit and suggestions to other staff of the Unit, to enhance the working methods of the Unit and the linguistic quality (style, terminology, etc.) of its output.
  • Perform other related duties (including leading teams of translators during meetings, working in evening and weekend shifts, secondment to other services for drafting or editing tasks, participating in reading committees or drafting groups) as required by the Chief of the Unit, and replace the Chief of Unit in his/her absence, when needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION

  • Advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent degree) in translation or other relevant field. 

 

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • At least 7 years’ experience in translation, self-revision and/or revision, including at least 3 years of experience gained in a governmental or international organization.

 

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge of UNESCO’s major fields of competence - Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture or Communication and Information. 
  • Ability to maintain good working relations in a multicultural environment and to work effectively in a team. 
  • Good IT skills, including excellent knowledge of computer-assisted translation tools such as neural machine translation tools and artificial intelligence-based tools, as well as terminological tools.

 

LANGUAGES

  • Spanish as the principal language (mother tongue).
  • Excellent knowledge of English and French.

  • At least 3 years’ experience in translation, self-revision and/or revision in an organization of the United Nations system.
  • Experience in finalizing in extenso summary and verbatim records. 

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Having passed the United Nations competitive examination for Spanish translators would be an advantage.

 

LANGUAGES

  • Knowledge of other official language of UNESCO (Arabic or Russian).

The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 125 036 US $.
