OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Within the framework of the UNESCO 2021 2021 Recommendation on Open Science, in accordance with the UNESCO Programme and Budget  2024-2025 (42/C5), Major Programme II: Natural Sciences, C/5 Output 4.SC4 - Member States capacities strengthened to improve STI policies, access to scientific and technological advancements and enhance knowledge sharing, including through Open Science, under the overall authority of the Assistant-Director General for the Natural Science Sector, under the overall guidance of the Director of the Division for Science Policy and Basic Sciences (SC/PBS), the overall supervision of the Chief of the Section of Science Technology and Innovation Policy, and the supervision of the Programme Specialist coordinating the work on open science, the consultant shall undertake the following activities:

1. Contribute to the implementation of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science and in particular develop new and update existing Open Science toolkits elements (factsheets, guides etc) in the UN official languages.

3. Prepare and contribute to the regional trainings for national focal points and other relevant actors on the monitoring process of the implementation of the 2021 Recommendation on Open Science.

4. Organise and co-moderate the Open Science working groups meetings

5. Develop the compendium of diverse open science practices

6. Elaborate background documents, agendas and presentations for Open Science related meetings and events and in particular coordinate the preparation of the Global Open Science Forum, tentatively scheduled to take place in September 2024 in China

7. Elaborate background documents, agendas and presentations for Open Science related meetings and events and in particular coordinate the preparation of the 2nd Diamond Open Access Summit and related events, tentatively scheduled to take place in December 2024 in South Africa

8. Produce communication materials, articles, fact sheet press releases, op-eds for the media and in collaboration with UNESCO’s Communication and Public Engagement (CPE).

  1. Advanced draft of training materials for the regional trainings on Open Science monitoring.
  2. Compendium of open science practices.
  3. Report of regional trainings on the monitoring monitoring process of the implementation of the 2021 Recommendation on Open Science.
  4. Draft fact sheet on Open Science skills and competencies framework.
  5. Background documents and report of  the Open Science Forum.
  6. Background documents and report of Diamond Open Access meetings and events

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in natural sciences, basic sciences, science policy, or applied statistics/data science. 

 

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • At least 4 years of professional experience with progressive responsibility in the field of natural sciences, basic sciences, science policy, or applied statistics/data science.
  • Experience working with and reconciling data from multiple sources.

 

LANGUAGES

  • Excellent knowledge (oral and written) of English.

 

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES 

  • Excellent data collection and analysis skills.

  • Strong analytical and drafting skills for a variety of audiences. 

  • Ability to present research findings and complex relationships clearly in graphs, figures and in compelling narratives tailored to a variety of audiences,

  • Excellent IT skills to carry out the work.

  • Demonstrated capacity to work under tight deadlines. 

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION

  • Advanced university degree (PhD degree or equivalent) in n natural sciences, basic sciences, science policy, or applied statistics/data science, or other related natural science discipline.
