OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

 The UNESCO Regional Office in New Delhi covers Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. The incumbent shall contribute to the design, implementation, development, and coordination of activities carried out under Major Programme IV - Culture in the South Asia region in close collaboration with the Member States, local communities, and other stakeholders and close cooperation and coordination with the relevant Entities of the Culture Sector at Headquarters.

 

Under the current biennium programme (2024-2025), UNESCO prioritizes on advocating culture as a driving force for sustainable development, which should lead all international platforms to recognize culture as a strong enabler for sustainable development. In line with this, and within the framework of the World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism, UNESCO New Delhi Regional Office for South Asia will carry out various capacity building for governmental officials as well as tourism stakeholders to cultural heritage tourism in a more sustainable manner, in terms of carrying capacity, but also to ensure that any tourism programmes should respect the aspiration of local communities, and finally to place the protection of cultural heritage in the heart of tourism projects.

 

Long Description

Under the overall authority of the Director of the UNESCO New Delhi Office and the supervision of the Programme Specialist of Culture Sector, UNESCO New Delhi, the incumbent will:

  • Assist the Culture Sector in implementing the World Heritage programme and facilitate the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in South Asian countries, notably Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
  • Coordinate, within the framework of the above-mentioned Programme, the World Heritage and Sustainable Development for Local Communities project being implemented in India and Sri Lanka, among others, by i) coordinating various activities with concerned local communities, local governing bodies such as Urban Development, Municipality as well as various Development authorities and civil society, including coordinating administrative arrangements involved in the implementation of the above-mentioned project;
  • Ensure adequate reporting of the aforementioned project that needs to be prepared regularly in line with UNESCO’s established practices for funds-in-trust projects
  • Assist the Culture in its efforts to promote the World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism programme, notably capacity building at the South Asia regional level towards achieving the SDG 2030 through sustainable tourism activities leveraging both tangible and intangible cultural heritage
  • Assist the culture sector in implementing various activities under the framework of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, notably in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
  • Perform any task requested either by the Programme Specialist or Director of the Office.

MANDATORY REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • University degree in the relevant field

 

Work experience

  • A minimum of 4 years of work experience in the culture and social sector
  • Work experience in supporting project management and coordination.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Qualification and Work experience.

  • Advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in cultural heritage, creative industries, cultural landscapes, heritage management, or relevant fields.
  • Experience in Arts and Culture, working with the community in India would be an asset.

UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days of annual leave, 24 days of certified sick leave etc..

 

Duration of Contract

The duration of the contract is 1 year with a probation period of 3 months, with the possibility of extension depending on the availability of funds and the candidate's performance.
