OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the direct supervision of the Culture Program Officer and the overall authority of the Director of the UNESCO Addis Ababa Liaison Office to the AU and UNECA, the incumbent will assist the implementation of the liaison duty with AUC and UNSDCF and extra-budgetary culture program. The incumbent works in the framework of UNESCO’s Medium-Term Strategy (C/4s), the Approved Program and Budget (C/5), the 2030 Sustainable Development, the AU Agenda 2060 - the Africa We Want as well assisting on UNSDCF and national cooperation in the field of the implementation of Conventions for the protection and promotion of cultural heritage and the diversity of cultural expression.

Duties

Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO Addis Ababa Liaison Office and direct supervision of National Culture Professional, the consultant will perform the following functions:

 

  • Assist in organizing the regional dialogue on the return and restitution of cultural property to Africa
  • Follow-up with AUC on the AU Theme of the year 2025: ‘‘Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations’’
  • Liaise and maintain bi-lateral cooperation with AUC, coordination mechanism with UNSDCF, partner institutions in Ethiopia, the donors and UNESCO offices in Paris and Nairobi.
  • Develop proposals for resource mobilization and prepare planning, implementation, monitoring as well as timely reporting of the extra-budgetary culture programs.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor and Director of the Office.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master's degree and above in social studies (e.g., Cultural & natural Heritage management, sustainable tourism development, anthropology, archaeology, creative art, cultural policy or related fields)

Work Experience
Minimum three years’ experience in cultural/natural heritage institutions and familiarity with the United Nation system, African Union, national culture institutions
Strong understanding of the UNESCO culture conventions in the field of culture
Experience in project development and management, including coordination of activities, information/knowledge management and project reporting.
Experience of working with international or continental organizations in culture and related fields.
Demonstrated experience working with local, national and international governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Required skills
Excellent analytical and research, report writing, and verbal communication skills in English &/or French
Proven experience in project management and implementation
Excellent coordination, facilitation and negotiation skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, preferably with international organizations
Demonstrated capacity in strategic planning and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-cultural environment and to engage effectively with existing and potential institutional beneficiaries and collaborators.
Flexibility and ability to work under tight deadlines.
Languages : Proficiency in spoken and writing English; and knowledge of French is an advantage
