OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
UNESCO supports the Government of Uzbekistan in advancing high-quality, inclusive, and equitable education through its comprehensive Education Programme. Working in close cooperation with the Ministry of Preschool and School Education (MoPSE) and other national partners, UNESCO focuses on strengthening teacher professional development, improving learning environments, promoting competency-based education (CBE), and advancing the use of ICT and digital learning for transformative and sustainable education outcomes.
Across multiple initiatives, such as the ISHONCH funded projects ““Empowering Education in Uzbekistan” and the joint ISDB/ISFD/GPE SMART-ED Project for Improving the Quality and Efficiency of Education Services in the Republic of Uzbekistan, UNESCO provides technical assistance for policy development, capacity-building, curriculum and teacher education reforms, and the enhancement of both pre-service and in-service teacher training systems. This work aims to equip educators with the skills, tools, and resources needed to deliver learner-centred, inclusive, and future-ready education, with particular attention to the needs of vulnerable learners, rural communities, and disadvantaged groups.
To support the effective implementation of activities under the Education Programme, UNESCO is seeking a committed Project Assistant who will work under the overall guidance of the Senior Project Officer and in close collaboration with the project team. The incumbent will provide administrative, financial, and programmatic support related to the planning, coordination, and delivery of education activities, ensuring compliance with UNESCO’s rules and regulations and contributing to the achievement of individual project results.
Detailed tasks decription
Under the overall authority of the Head of the UNESCO Tashkent Office and the direct supervision of the Senior Project Officer (Education), an incumbent will be responsible for providing assistance through delivery of a range of project and administrative activities in support of the projects.
- Undertake all administrative and programmatic tasks related to the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of project activities in close cooperation with the Project team.
- Assist the Project team in the preparation, monitoring, and administration of contracts, including initiating and following up transactions, verifying invoices against contract terms, and supporting contract amendments.
- Facilitate communication and coordination with relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Preschool and School Education (MoPSE), pedagogical universities, regional teacher training centers, UN agencies, and NGOs, as required by supervisors.
- Maintain and regularly update a database of education experts, pedagogical staff, universities, and relevant publications related to teacher education and CBE reform.
- Ensure proper management of project documentation, including filing systems (paper and electronic), databases, and other information systems in accordance with UNESCO and partner procedures.
- Assist in the organization of meetings, workshops, missions, and trainings, including preparation of agendas, briefings, minutes, participant lists, presentations, and other related materials.
- Provide general office assistance, including drafting correspondence, preparing reports and presentations, managing emails, and maintaining mailing and contact lists.
Long Description
- Contribute to collecting information from partners and stakeholders for visibility, reporting, or monitoring and evaluation purposes.
- Conduct translation and interpretation of project-related documents and correspondence from English to Uzbek/Russian (and vice versa), as required.
- Travel to project sites in different regions to support implementation, provide on-site assistance, and facilitate coordination with regional stakeholders.
- Support the Project team in preparing progress reports, monitoring tools, and presentations for internal and external use.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors to ensure the effective implementation and success of project activities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- At least first level university degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in the field of education, social sciences, Administration or other relevant field.
Work Experience:
- At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in the field of education, administrative support and/or project implementation.
Languages:
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and Uzbek.
Skills/Competencies:
- Good knowledge of project planning and management tools;
- Good IT skills;
- Strong facilitation skills and communication skills;
- Integrity and drive for results;
- Ability to adapt to dynamic environments and to work effectively in a multicultural/multinational environment;
- Ability to work independently and in a team, to meet deadlines;
