OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Working under the authority of the Chief of Section for Media Development and Media and Information Literacy, the consultant shall:

 

-    Organize activities linked to UNESCO’s work on media in crisis and disaster situations, i.e. media and terrorism, migration and climate change. This includes the development of applications or training material, the organisation of events and the implementation of activities.
-    Backstop and monitor contracts as well as UNESCO Field Offices activities related to media in situations of crisis and disaster. Help achieve the related 40 C/5 targets of Programme V.
-    Ensure quality achievement of the programme outputs, report on progress and regularly monitor and update work plans.

-    Build partnerships related to media response to crisis and disaster situations, including Member States, National Commissions, UNESCO Chairs and Centres, civil society networks and organizations, journalists and media professionals’ associations, media organizations and outlets, media regulators and other relevant stakeholders. Identify and pursue fund-raising possibilities.
-    Conduct research into existing resources and best practices regarding media response to crisis and disaster situations.
-    Draft correspondence, replies to governing bodies, reports, concept notes, speeches, briefings, project proposals and other documents
-    Conceive public information resources and identify opportunities for media exposure. Pitch stories and prepare web articles, press releases, audio-visual and social media content, lives, maintain and regular update dedicated webpages, etc.
-    Assist with any other necessary tasks as required by Chief CI/MDI.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

•    Advanced University Degree (Master’s or higher) or equivalent professional qualifications in media, journalism, communications, or relevant fields.

 

EXPERIENCE

•    At least 5 years’ experience on record in developing the strategy and coordinating the implementation of social or humanitarian activities held at international level;

•    Minimum 5 years’ proven record in organizing events, capacity-building activities and visibility campaigns to support impact-oriented action;

•    Experience of coordinating networks and establishing contacts and joint projects with representatives of government and civil society, public and private sectors, including motivating donors to engage with an area;

•    Experience of developing and writing creative and motivating campaigning materials which argue a case, provide information and guidance for achieving impact.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English or French and good knowledge of the other language. Fluency in a third United Nations language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and/or Spanish) would be an asset.

 

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

-    Good communications skills, including the drafting of web articles, social media materials and formal letters.

-    Basic-level graphic design, multimedia production or similar communications skills, including use of Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Fireworks, Illustrator, InDesign and/or other, and ability to manage web and social media content.

-    Capacity to manage a heavy and varied workload effectively, under time restraint and pressure, including managing competing demands, maintaining high levels of accuracy, and ensuring excellent coordination of activities across diverse units and countries

-    Maturity and ability to solve problems are required
