OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
Objective: to provide technical and logistical expertise in terms of digital communications and event coordination for the Basic sciences, Research, Innovation and Engineering team.
Background:
Under the overall authority of the DIR/PBS, and the direct supervision of the Chief of Section of Basic Science, Research Innovation and Engineering PBS/RIE and in close coordination with the Sector Communication and Partnerships Officer, in accordance with the UNESCO Programme and Budget 2024-2025 (42C/5) and within the framework of the Output 4.SC5 of the Major Programme II (Institutional and human capacities in basic sciences, technology, research, innovation, and engineering enhanced to advance knowledge for sustainable development), the objectives of the contractor shall be the following:
Long Description
- Create, draft and edit content in English and translate into French and Arabic when required. including:
- web pages, news, events and stories,
- press releases,
- social media assets
- Develop and design digital and printed brochures and other communication materials in English and French
- Manage on-site and on-line events related to the activities, including the opening ceremony in 4th of February 2025 at UNESCO HQ.
The above mentioned tasks shall be implemented by the consultant for 1/ the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development 2024-2033 (IDSSD): 2/ UNESCO-Carlos J. Finlay Prize for Microbiology, UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences, and UNESCO-Al Fozan International Prize for the Promotion of Young Scientist; 3/ World Engineering Day 2025, International Day of Mathematics 2025, World Metrology Day 2025, and UNESCO African Engineering Week 2025; 4/ the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025 (IYQ) as well as for the webpages of the PBS/RIE programmes in basic sciences and engineering:
In addition, the consultant will more specifically :
- Edit and help the overall management of the IDSSD’s submission platform.
• Provide continuous update to the PBS/RIE section’s hubpage.

- Create, design, edit and translate news, events and story items related to the section’s programmes in English language.
- Develop and design communication materials for the section’s programmes in English language, such as brochures, social media posts and others.
- Coordinate events for the section’s programmes.

COMPETENCIES (Core / Managerial)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in the field of social sciences, communications or in related subject.
Work experience
- At least 2 years of professional experience in digital communications.
- At least 1 year experience in event planning
- At least 1 year of international professional experience preferably within the UN system.
Skill and competencies
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good IT skills of MS Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel and PowerBI), and knowledge in Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, PremierePro).
- Autonomy, flexibility to adjust schedules and work priorities, emphasis on quality, efficiency, and results.
- Ability to work within a multicultural team.
- Ability to work in diverse and challenging environments and to meet deadlines.
Language
- Excellent knowledge of English or French and good knowledge of the other language.
